DETROIT–It’s hard to sweep a divisional rival in the NHL and the Detroit Red Wings scored three goals in the third period to defeat the Florida Panthers 3-0 Monday night at Joe Louis Arena Monday night.
In addition to the loss the Panthers lost top-line forward Aleksander Barkov who was hit in the head by Detroit’s Justin Abdelkader in the second period. Barkov left the game and is expected to miss tonight’s game in Buffalo. The Panthers were irritated about the hit and hope the play is reviewed by NHL officials for possible disciplinary action.
Pavel Datsyuk scored two goals for the Red Wings and Tomas Tatar had the other Detroit goal while Petr Mrazek posted his fourth shutout of the season while stopping 23 shots for the winners. Al Montoya took the loss in net for Florida as his record fell to 8-3-1.
