Jagr named NHL player of week as Florida heals, practices and hosts Arizona Thursday

(Editor’s note: A few updates to Tuesday’s post starting with a nice video compilation from NHL.com and updated Atlantic Division standings, which see Tampa Bay now within three points of first-place Florida).

SUNRISE–Jaromir Jagr has enjoyed a good run lately with a solid showing in Nashville for the NHL All-Star weekend, a quality birthday celebration, and scoring three goals in two games to become the third all-time leading goal scorer with 742 goals. But Jagr is not just hanging around chipping away at records. He’s the leading scorer on a first-place team and ranks among the best at his position this season.

In recognition of the passing Brett Hull and becoming third all-time in goal scoring, Jagr was named NHL player of the week.

You may have seen the highlights. You probably didn’t hear the highlights in Spanish. (Worth waiting through the commmercial to hear).

Good news from practice this week: Aleksander Barkov has been back on ice and  will play Thursday when the Panthers host Arizona at BB&T Center.  He also hopes Jagr keeps scoring.

Barkov joked that he hopes Jagr still has a few goals left for Thursday: “Jags just broke record, I hope he’s not going to stop right now.”

Through it all, Jagr remains appreciative of his teammates…

“You gotta have great teammates to pass you the puck… I’ve got 20 goals at age 44 because of them.” – Jagr

Jagr’s next major target is Gordie Howe’s 1850 points, good for third all-time. Jagr has 1845 and JAGRometer.com will provide updates should be get points  in game Thursday when Florida hosts Arizona and weekend games Saturday at Columbus and Sunday at Minnesota.
A few days off haven’t hurt the Panthers in the Atlantic Division.

When Florida resumes action Thursday, Barkov and defenseman Eric Gudbranson will be back in action, Coach Gerard Gallant said Tuesday morning. Jonathon Huberdeau, suffering from concussion symptoms since crashing into the boards early in Saturday’s win over Winnipeg, will not play then and could be sidelined until the Panthers return home March 7 to play Boston. The team has announced special pricing for veterans and guests for the upcoming home game with Arizona and Sunday through Thursday games until the end of the regular season. Tickets can be secured through panthers.nhl.com.
