Like all but one scoring attempts by the Florida Panthers Saturday night, Jaromir Jagr was unable to find the back of net as Arizona defeated the Panthers 5-1 Saturday night. A tough 1-3-1 road trip complete, Florida hosts Boston Monday night at BB&T Center.
—————————————————-
PHOENIX–Arizona ended a seven-game losing streak Saturday night defeating the Florida Panthers 5-1. The NHL season has reached the time of year where bad teams often lose to teams expected to make it to the playoffs. The Coyoties did not follow this script on this Saturday night at the edge of the desert.
Given the final score it was a notable feat that Aleksander was one of the few Panthers to finish with a plus rating at +1. Jaromir Jagr, needing one point to move ahead of Gordie Howe to break a tie and become the third all-time point producer, was stifled in his attempt. The only Florida goal came during 4-on-4 play when Aaron Ekblad scored in the second period. Newly-acquired Alex Tanguay had two goals in his debut for the Coyotes. The Panther dropped two points behind Tampa Bay withe loss and Florida holds a one -point margin over Boston, who visits the BB&T Center Monday night. It will be hte first of three home games for the Panthers, who will host Ottawa Thursday and Philadelphia Saturday night. Tickets for these and future Panthers home games can be secured at panthers.nhl.com.
What did you give up for Lent?
In some churches the sacrifice of something trivial is a practice that dates back many centuries. Last year Jagr gave up Diet Coke. This year it’s coffee. This article from a day before Jagr tied Gordie Howe for career points tells how this year Jagr have up his 10 cups of coffee a day AND increased his production in the weeks since then.
Lazy journalism
The only annoying aspect of following the career of Jaromir Jagr is the lazy media in some cities who try to prime fans for what “might be the last time Jagr plays in (fill in the blank).” Hockey writers across the continent have been using this trite story line since #68 returned from the KHL in 2011! Here was a refeshing story where Jagr says he could make it to 50.
It took a long time, but by playing his 1612th NHL game against Arizona Saturday, Jagr has now spent an equal time as a Pittsburgh Penguin as he has playing for other NHL teams combined. A nice look back at the Jagr experience!
JAGR-REAGAN Connection
The death of Nancy Reagan, wife of deceased US President reminds us of a phone call a young Jagr had with the president. Here’s today’s Jagr-O-Meter…
Jagr was the last player to head for the locker room after the loss Saturday night. We’ll see if some home cooking revives a team gasping for air for most of the last two weeks in Monday’s big game with Boston.
