MONTREAL — With scoring spread across three lines the Florida Panthers defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-1 Tuesday night at Bell Centre. Following Boston’s loss to San Jose later in the evening, Florida finished the day in first place. The Panthers season record is 39-22-9-87 through 70 games of the 82-game regular season.
Florida goals were scored by Vincent Trocheck (21), Nick Bjugstad (12), Jiri Hudler (12) and Aleksander Barkov (23). Barkov has tied Reilly Smith and Jaromir Jagr for the goal scoring lead on the first place team. Jagr had an assist on the Barkov goal for career assist 1111 and his team-leading 54th point of the season. Jagr now has 1856 points in his NHL career and currently chasing Mark Messier’s second all time of 1887, an unlikely accomplishment this year but well within striking distance if he returns to the NHL.
Montreal’s lone goal came from Alex Galchenyuk (26). Al Montoya stopped 27 of 18 shots in goal for the winning Panthers. Highlights of the game from NHL.com can be seen here….
JAGRometer.com presents a 70-game breakdown of the Florida Panthers season and Jaromir Jagr.
Jagr is averaging a point per game over the last 20 games. At a time of year when players are starting to get tired Jagr’s production suggests that he is still getting stronger. This despite some fantasy bloggers and other non-believers claims at the halfway point of the season that Jagr’s scoring would decline in the second half.
The latest Jagr-O-Meter…
Leading up to the game several of the young Montreal players stated their anticipation about against playing against the legend, who is reportedly more than 30-years-old.
Expect similar coverage from local media leading up to Florida’s game Thursday night in Toronto. Thus far Florida is 1-1-0 on the road trip. The Panthers host Detroit Saturday night at BB&T Center. Clad in different Jagr jerseys and hair styles from 68’s career, they gained league-wide recognition when they caught Jagr’s attention during a pre-game skate of a Dallas Stars game in Canada during the 2012-2013 season. Since then, they convene at games in Western Canada and make a road trip or two every year, playing street hockey with locals, posing for hundreds of pictures, and having a good time with fans while honoring an all-time NHL legend.
