SUNRISE–Nothing punctuates a bad game like a backup goalie getting a shutout but that was misery inflicted upon the Panthers as visiting Nashville shutout Florida 5-0 Saturday night behind the 22-shot save performance of Carter Hutton.
The offensive leaders for the Panthers were Jaromir Jagr and Nick Bjugstad with three shots on goal each. Roberto Luongo was ineffective for the second straight game and has allowed 8 goals in his last four periods of play or a 6.00 goals against average. JAGRometer.com isn’t afraid to blame a goalie now and then He wasn’t helped by a defense corps minus reliable defenseman Willie Mitchell and Eric Gudbranson. Up front things are not much better with Aleksander Barkov still sidelined with his concussion. During the game two other Florida forwards were lost and results of their evaluation have not been released. Brandon Pirri hurt his leg crashing into the boards behind the net and Quinton Howden was clobbered in the head in front of the benches. Like the Barkov hit against Detroit, the Panthers think a suspension is warranted for the shoulder to head hit by Nashville’s Anthony Bitteto.
Two of the best offensive players in the history of their sports were captured in this photo from NHL.com. In the first row is retired Hall of Fame Quarterback Dan Marino of NHL’s Miami Dolphins. Marino grew up and attended college in Pittsburgh, where future NHL Hall of Famer Jaromir Jagr started his NHL career. Marino mustn’t have been looking at the scoreboard because Jagr surely was concerned about what he was seeing.
Harvey Fialkov has more on the game and the injury report in today’s Sun Sentinel.
Regardless of any disciplinary action, the Panthers are playing with four AHL players and it could five or six if none of the injured players return for MOnday’s game with the Pittsburgh Penguins at BB&T Center. Tickets for that and all Florida home games are available at panthers.nhl.com
