DENVER–No one sets out to score 1850 points but Jaromir Jagr rests on that plateau after his first period assist on an Eric Gudbranson goal meant Jagr climbed one of the NHL’s highest elevations, tying Gordie Howe for third all-time.
Here’s nhl.com video of the play, which also included a primary assist by Aleksander Barkov.
(Editor’s Note: JAGRometer.com reminds you we shared some great Gordie Howe centent in our March 3 edition and encourage you to learn more about “Mr. Hockey” by reading it).
The joy of that moment, which tied the game at 1-1 in the first period was temporary. The Panthers carried a 3-1 deficit into the final period before losing to the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 at Denver’s Pepsi Center.
Florida not only lost the game, they lost first place, falling to second place for the first time since defeating the New York Rangers 3-0 on January 2 at BB&T Center. The Tampa Bay Lightning claimed first place from the Panthers with a 4-1 victory at Ottawa. Boston also beat Chicago. The top of the division is now crowded with Tampa Bay and Florida having 80 points and Boston a win away from matching them with 78. The Bruins come to Sunrise for a Monday night game at BB&T Center, which will be the Panthers first game home after a five-game road trip. The final game of their journey, which has produced a 1-2-1 record is Saturday night in Glendale when Florida plays Arizona.
Held without a goal, the third period of Thursday’s game was one of the best in terms of pressure applied. The Panthers pounded Avalanche backup goalie Calvin Pickard with 24 of their 40 shots for the game but the Colorado netminder was equal to the task. Florida outshot the Avs 40-26. They were able to push up to the final buzzer as Florida goalie Roberto Luongo stopped a penalty shot from Nathan MacKinnon to keep the Panthers within 1.
Brian Campbell scored the other Florida goal, while Colorado had goals from Gabriel Landeskog, Mikkel Boedker and the game winner by Matt Duchene.

After the game Jagr told NHL.com: “It doesn’t matter,” said Jagr, who was in no mood to celebrate his milestone point. “We put ourselves in a hole, just pushing in the door, but the door closed.”
