While I escaped the day to day rigors of journalism in the 90's, I created the Jagr-O-Meter for anyone who cares to keep abreast of Jaromir Jagr's march through the NHL record books. Jagr is setting standards that will take decades to surpass (other than eclipsing the astronomical numbers posted by Wayne Gretzky). As an intrigued observer since first watching Jagr play for the Pittsburgh Penguins in a pre-season game vs. the New York Islanders in 1990, Jagr has confirmed my first impression that with good health he could become one of the greatest players of all time. I covered his first four seasons in the NHL for a small town newspaper in Indiana, PA. During that time I also was among credited advisers to Czech reporter Jan Smid, who worked with the legend to produce, "Jagr," an autobiography in the late 90s. As teams, continents and leagues have changed, I continue to be thrilled with his game and grateful he resumed his NHL career. No longer the shy teen that that came to the NHL, his wit and wisdom are sought by media after games and practices. He's a productive player with occasional displays of brilliance that reminds long-time fans of great things we've seen before.
